Concise overview of Papua New Guinea's history

It has been a while since i left. I was doing something else and did not visit my bloggers blogs page. My apologies.
For now i would like to mention about a significant thing about my Country Papua New Guinea which just turn 50 years in September 16th 2025. A big milestone for the country and were proud of it.
Here's a concise overview of Papua New Guinea's rich and complex history:
🧭 European Contact
• The island was first sighted by European navigators in 1526, and named "Papua" by Portuguese explorer Jorge de Menezes and "New Guinea" by Spanish explorer Yñigo Ortiz de Retes in 1545.
• Colonial rule began in the late 19th century:
• Southern Papua was annexed by Britain and later administered by Australia.
• Northern New Guinea was controlled by Germany until World War I, after which Australia took over both regions
🌍 World War II and Unification
- During World War II, Papua New Guinea was a major battleground between Japanese and Allied forces.
- After the war, the territories of Papua and New Guinea were merged into a single administrative unit under Australian control.
Independence and Modern Era
- Papua New Guinea became self-governing in 1973 and achieved full independence on September 16, 1975
- The country faced internal challenges, including a nine-year rebellion in Bougainville that ended with a peace agreement in 2001
- Papua New Guinea today is known for its extraordinary cultural diversity, with over 800 languages spoken and vibrant traditions that reflect its ancient roots and colonial past.
